Communication Vice Provost Sarah Swager was welcomed to the Committee and members introduced themselves. ASCRC agreed to focus on Curriculum Barriers. The document is an initial information gathering step. An ASCRC Workgroup was formed to continue working to identify barriers and come up with action plans. It will review the retention, attrition, and graduation data and reach out to representatives from Admissions, the Registrars Office, and professors teaching courses with high rates of W,D, and Fs. It should look at attendance records if available and course sequencing issues. It may analyze other data to determine contributing factors, such as poor communication of available resources/initiatives. It should identify questions and discuss strategies for resolution. It could create a plan to help communicate best practices and identify whether additional resources are needed to support ֱ in challenging courses. It can reach out to others working on the Presidents Priorities for action. The hope is that there will be an initial recommendation to take to the Faculty Senate prior to the end of the semester. Professors Coffin and Gagliardi, Executive Director French, and Vice Provost Swager agreed to be on the Workgroup. Student members will also be recruited. Professor Sugden agreed to meet with the Workgroup to share the data on his courses and Chemistrys Drop Down course program. The Workgroup should also review the co-req remedial pilot with College Writing and Math. The Law School transitioned to a fully elective curriculum and has had an improvement with student success as a result. Professor Gagliardi has children attending other universities with much more flexible curriculum. Majors should evaluate their requirements in comparison to other institutions. Due to staffing reductions UM is offering fewer sections, so ֱ may experience difficulty getting courses. Camie subsequently received a request for faculty teaching in Irish ֱ to meet with ASCRC. The Chair of English did not approve of the move and the faculty are not supportive. Interim Dean McNulty suggested the move as a means to increase enrollment and it has been discussed for over a year. Chair Cobbs will invite representatives to a meeting to let their concerns be heard. ASCRC needs additional information to understand the situation. Chair Cobbs will request that the representatives come prepared to address several questions: How does a move impact the ֱ enrolled in the Irish Studies program? How does the interdisciplinary program of Irish studies change? What faculty would change departments? How does this impact Promotion & Tenure? Why move the Department? I have heard it is to increase the number of ֱ enrolled. How will the move increase enrollment? Other comments/concerns? English changed its curriculum two years ago to require ֱ to take two courses from the core. LIT236L Literary Histories. 3 Credits LIT246L Genres, Themes, Approaches. 3 Credits However, they have the option of taking the two of the same courses with variable content. Unfortunately the courses were not set up to be repeatable, so ֱ are being charged a repeat fee and their grade from the first course is not included in their GPA. English requests that the course be repeatable for six credits. Troy Morgan, Assistant Registrar identified this issue. He recommends the department chose separate course numbers for the different versions of the course. In accordance with common course numbering only courses in the X90s have variable content. Camie will communicate with the department and request e-Curr forms be submitted for the courses. Professor James Randal, Chair of the General Education Committee joined the Committee at 3:00 p.m. He provided at update about efforts on the UM Core Pilot. The Committee has been given an extension to craft the Pilot and hopes to follow some of the guidance included in the Chronicle of Higher Educations, Reforming Gen Ed: Strategies for Success on Your Campus. The Committee is planning to hold to open forums this semester to get faculty input on working draft, which includes: Competencies/Skills, Divisional/Disciplinary Breadth (Big Ideas Model), Interdisciplinary Core (1 lower division course + 1 upper-division course), and Freshman Seminar Component. The Freshman Seminar may be linked to the lower-division Interdisciplinary Core. It hopes to incorporate as many high impact practices as possible and involve other innovative initiates on campus such as the academic communities, similar to the old team taught LSH courses. The theme could be linked to the instructors discipline and others could be brought in to discuss other approaches to solve the problem. It is important that the UM Core teaches critical thinking and adaptability for ֱ to become informed, engaged citizens. ASCRC requested that the UM Core Pilot consider transferability and how the MUS Core would mesh with the pilot framework. The Core should have fewer credits than the current program. The idea is for ֱ to have flexibility within the Divisional requirement. There is a Subcommittee working on the Freshman Seminar. It has been expanded to include faculty teaching existing Freshman Seminars. It hopes that revised courses can be offered for incoming freshman since it is linked to student retention. Orientation will now be a full week and include a three day immersive experience. The General Education Committee hopes to have a framework ready to be presented at the April Faculty Senate meeting. Then in the fall departments can think about the impact and courses it can contribute. This is an opportunity to build a foundation that is unique to UM. Those involved with the Innovation Factory proposal will be invited to a meeting later in the semester.
